As a newbie I was embarrassed to say something and ask for my pin back so I ended up hanging on to it and now I just use it as a reference. When the CM handed me the pin I knew something was up because of how light it felt. These last couple of pictures are of a counterfeit zero pin I traded with a Cast Member for at WDW about a year ago. Impatience got the better of me since I REALLY wanted to pick up some pins from this set and I decided to take a chance. Another red flag was that the seller used stock photos from pinpics rather than original closeup shots of the front and back of the pin. This entire pin set has a scrapper warning on and I did know that going in to the bid. I took the seller’s 100% feedback rate as a good sign and went for it - now I know better. They are Carl and Beta from “Up” as part of the PT52 mystery series. So here are some pictures I took of the two pins I got today. These pins could be copied designs of legitimate pins currently being sold at the parks or all-new designs that were never approved by Disney. A counterfeit pin is one that is knowingly bootlegged without Disney’s authorization. Workers are supposed to destroy these pins but many are illegally redistributed by third party channels in China where they are manufactured. These pins have issues with enamel coloration, scratches, roughness of the edges, dents, etc. Quick note: A scrapper is a pin produced by Disney that does not pass quality control checks.

However, since I am new to the hobby and know there are lots of other beginners out there trying to learn how to figure out of a pin is a scrapper, I thought it was a good idea to post pictures of scrappers or counterfeits as I come across them. This week I received two scrapper pins in the mail which I purchased from a well-reviewed eBay seller. The good news is that there are many resources online to help you identify shady pins and their shady dealers so that hobbyists can reduce the amount of incidents they might have. Unfortunately, due to the overwhelming volume of scrappers and counterfeits entering circulation, encountering one is almost a certainty. Dealing with scrappers on auction sites and in the park is a huge challenge for collectors and traders of all experience levels.
